Opinion: Juggling work and school

This age-old question still doesn’t have a clear answer. What is more important? Should we do our homework, or should we go to work to make the gas money to turn in that homework?

It seems that college wasn’t designed to have us go to five classes a week and work 40 hours. What about us that try to accomplish both?

Sean Estrada is pursuing his master’s degree in Journalism and is also enlisted in the Air Force. He feels that as time has gone on, it has been easier for him to prioritize his time.

“If I want to transition to another job after my time in the Air Force, now is the time to get experience, so I am not stuck,” said Estrada.

Estrada does well at managing his time now, but it wasn’t always that way. With this, college students can’t lose hope. Do your best, and someday we will have it all figured out, right? In the mean time, here are some tips to make each day easier:

Coffee – They do not sell coffee in Barnes and Noble for no reason. All of those late nights that turn into early mornings can take a toll on the mind and eyes. Keep those eyes open through the morning shift and afternoon class with a Venti-something.

Organize – This may sound like a no-brainer, but how important is organization, really? Visit the “planner” section of your favorite bookstore and use it. Writing out every assignment due date, every work shift, and every extra credit opportunity helps make it happen. Our memory can’t be our only tool to success. Being organized and having a plan is vital to getting everything done, efficiently.

Be Realistic – The race to graduate is understandable, but there is only so much one college student can take. If you have to work 40 hours a week, then maybe taking six classes is not sensible. It is okay to not have time for everything, and it is okay to take your time. Success will come when you can give it your all and not a minute sooner.

Make Time for Yourself – All work and no play is a recipe for disaster. Take time to read a good book or go to the gym. Getting burnt out by work and school will lead to more stress rather than success. Press “save” and return to it later.

Friends – Without support through this journey, it is that much harder to get it all done. Having someone there to help you study or help you take a break will make it all easier. Friends will be there to make you laugh, take you out, and make this whole college experience memorable.
