Week of Welcome: Weekend Event Calendar

By Lis Casanova

Alright y’all, school is back on —there’s no doubt about that— surely, the dread (or excitement!) has begun to settle in. In any case, let’s put all that bottled up angst toward having some good times, shall we? Today begins Week Of Welcome and it’s  our last chance to enjoy the last remnant of summer vacation, at least while the weekend lasts. Here’s what there is to do.

Friday

Prizes Galore: Blink and you’ll miss it! Back to School Bingo/Ice Cream Social is going on right now, 8-10:30 p.m., at The Reef, aka the USFSP’s dining hall. Besides the obvious bingo and ice cream, what else really makes students participate in events? Free groceries! If you don’t appreciate this yet, believe us, you will. Until then, free ice cream.

Saturday

Take A Dip: Maybe you’re already a St. Pete resident or maybe you’ve just moved here, either way you might know that St. Pete and the beach go hand in hand. And what’s better on a Saturday night than some BBQ at the beach and some volleyball — nothing, that’s right, nothing. Free BBQ at the Beach will take place from 4:30-6 p.m. at North Straub Park.

Fun On The Lawn: USFSP may be a small campus but thankfully, its lawn space does not disappoint one bit. As you may have noticed, we have a beautiful campus and WOW is all about having fun on it. Come out to Harbor Lawn from 6-8 p.m. and enjoy Opening Day activities. There will inflatables, games, food and a DJ.

Sunday

Coachin’: Did you guys know that USFSP offers peer coaches? They do. If you’re new to the school or an incoming freshman, peer coaches are especially helpful since they give the lowdown and answer your questions. The University Student Center Ballroom is hosting a Peer Coach Mixer and Reveal from 3-5 p.m. so that first-year students can meet their peer coach and yes, there will be free food.

Comedy: You may know him as the 2013 winner of the Bay Area Black Comedy Competition or as one of the NYC Kings of Comedy but now you can also know him as USFSP’s Week of Welcome Wild N’ Out Comedy Show artist, RIP Michaels. The improv comedy show, which will take place from 6-8 p.m. at the University Student Center Ballroom should ease you right into good feels.
