Fun in the Burg on an empty pocket

Getting a well-rounded college experience is not getting any easier on the wallet. With more budget cuts descending in the near future, many students may find themselves hard-pressed to pay for classes and still have the dime for a good time.

With a little looking, students can find economical entertainment possibilities close by. Here’s a short guide to some on the exploits waiting down the street or around the corner.

Parks and beaches: The season for beach roving has arrived—don’t overlook the ocean as a place for free diversion. St. Petersburg also has a vast network of underused and unexplored parks. The crown jewel among them, Boyd Hill Nature Preserve, has a $3 admission fee. They offer a large number of classes, hikes and other activities at little or no cost. Also, keep in mind the untold value of the chance to disconnect from urbanism and bond with your inner tree. Priceless.

Art and music: St. Petersburg is a mecca for the arts, something that many residents take for granted. Venues like the State Theatre and The Local usually offer tickets at prices downwards of $15, with an occasional free show.

If you desire a local flavor, The Studio @620 hosts a monthly gathering of musicians, artists and poets accordingly named PAM (Poetry, Art, and Music). Admission is $5.

Another oft forgotten facet of the city is all of the museums and art galleries that make their home here, many of which offer reduced or free admission to students, as well as a variety of interesting workshops and classes.

Street happenings and festivals: In addition to the already-thriving street life of St. Pete, there is almost always a festival of one type or another in procession, and something for every taste. Among upcoming events are the Green Thumb Festival and the International Folk Fair. A complete list can be found at stpetersburg.com/festivals.

The Grand Prix Indy car race is also fast approaching and sure to crowd the streets with people and vendors of all sorts. The adventurous soul might even try to observe the race from the heights of a building or parking garage.

The Saturday Morning Market by Al Lang Stadium on First Street is another unique staple of city culture worth experiencing. Even if you don’t buy anything, the display of foods and wares, live music, and the overall atmosphere is intriguing.
