On Tuesday, Oct. 6, Jared Bolton, 19 and Cynthia Wyre, 21, were crowned king and queen of USF St. Petersburg.
“It’s an honor to represent the school and show everyone that we aren’t just the monarchs under the king and queen, because that’s how it used to be,” Wyre said. “Now each campus has their own king and queen which shows people that we’re serious, we’re not just that ‘little campus over there.’”
In the past, the titles were reserved for students from the USF Tampa, while USFSP students were crowned duke and duchess and USF Sarasota-Manatee students were crowned earl and countess.
Wyre, a senior health science major, is actively involved in campus life and says she takes great pride in being a part of the USFSP community. Wyre was a residence assistant for two years and is currently on the executive board of the Dance Marathon and the 50th Anniversary Committee.
“I’ve really enjoyed seeing the campus grow and helping it grow. Not just by attending, but by getting involved on campus,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to be queen. I went to homecoming my freshman year and I thought, ‘That needs to be me. I want to represent the school.'”
Getting involved at school is nothing new to Wyre. She was on homecoming court and crowned prom queen her senior year at Robinson Senior High School in Tampa.
Bolton, a junior studying psychology, is also heavily involved on campus. He is the vice president of the Harborside Activities Board, a peer coach, an orientation leader and the marketing chair of the Residents Home Association – to name a few.
“I love USFSP. I love how we have that small classroom feel, but enough students to give you that real college experience. I’m so proud to represent this school,” Bolton said. “It feels pretty awesome to be king. It’s even cooler since we’re just now starting with king and queen.”
As king and queen, Bolton and Wyre are responsible for representing USFSP at all major homecoming events this year and crowning next year’s homecoming king and queen at the Homecoming Ball.
