USF celebrated transfer students during National Transfer Student Week on campus events all week long.
National Transfer Student Week (NTSW) was held Oct. 18-22 and celebrated transfer students and the professionals who support them along their college journey. NTSW is celebrated the third week of October every year.
Transfer students make up nearly 60% of USF’s undergraduate enrollment.
The USF community and the Tampa Bay area are a great appeal to transfer students, according to Ashlee Torres, a sophomore English major.
“Our campus has the same type of feel as community college,” said Nicole Leary, a peer coach and psychology major.
“I picked USFSP because of St. Petersburg,” said Edyn Gottlieb, a senior mass communications major. “I love how involved and active the community is here and I wanted to live somewhere beautiful.”
NTSW kicked off Monday with free snow cones and other freebies. More than 19 events were planned including Transfer Bull-rritos, a photo scavenger hunt and a transfer mixer at The Tavern.
Transfer Bull-rritos provided transfer students with the opportunity to swap a shirt from their previous college in exchange for a USF class shirt. Chipotle burritos were also available for the first 100 students.
It’s important to build awareness of common transfer student challenges, such as “transfer shock” which results in a GPA drop. USF supports transfer students through events, like NTSW, reminding them that they belong at USF.
