A group of retired faculty and staff of the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus have voiced opposition to the renaming the Student Life Center (SLC) in honor of former USF President Judy Genshaft.

In a letter sent out to the Board of Trustees on Monday afternoon, the association addresses Will Weatherford, chair of the board, with “an urgent request.”

“We ask that you postpone a decision until all stakeholders have an opportunity to weigh in on a potentially contentious issue,” the letter said.

The association expressed the need for a broader campus and community involvement before a decision is made.

“Please pause to consider our views and those of campus alumni, students, faculty, administrators, public officials and civic leaders before you act,” the letter said.

The letter contains signatures of 20 board members of the association, including its two co-chairs.

The proposal to rename the SLC came during a May 12 St. Petersburg Campus Board meeting. Board member Debbie Nye Sembler, who also served on the Board of Trustees for 12 years while Genshaft was president, presented the proposal.

The naming proposal is scheduled to be discussed by the Board of Trustees tomorrow.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
