The head coach of the University of South Florida women’s basketball team, Jose Fernandez, celebrated 25 years at the helm during a pregame ceremony at the Yuengling Center on Nov. 14.

The event, filled with heartfelt tributes, laughter and tears, highlighted his impact on the program and the lives of his players.

Fernandez, who began his USF tenure in 2000, has elevated the Bulls from a mid-major contender to a nationally respected program. Under his leadership, the team has made eight NCAA Tournament appearances and secured two American Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament titles. With 425 career wins to date, Fernandez is USF’s all-time leader in victories and one of the longest-tenured coaches in Division I women’s basketball.

“I want to thank our administration and university for this 25th anniversary celebration,” Fernandez said. “It shows why this is such a special place and why I’ve been here for 25 years.”

Fernandez credited the efforts of athletic director Michael Kelly, associate athletic director Lee Butler, and others who organized the tribute. During the ceremony, the team honored their past by donning throwback jerseys featuring the vintage USF Bull logo, a nod to the program’s growth and history during Fernandez’s tenure.

When Fernandez arrived, USF women’s basketball was far from the powerhouse it is today. He recalled working out of the “dungeon” of the Sun Dome, with limited resources and facilities. Over the years, he has overseen the program’s transformation, benefiting from the university’s evolving athletic infrastructure.

“Who would have thought 25 years ago we’d have an indoor practice facility or new sports such as beach volleyball and lacrosse?” Fernandez said.

International recruiting has been another hallmark of Fernandez’s career, with players from across the globe finding success in Tampa. The current roster features seven newcomers, including international recruits, from Bulgaria, Spain, Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and more, who exemplify his ability to attract global talent.

“We have been very successful here, but making a difference in someone’s life means more,” Fernandez said. “Getting messages and calls from former players and seeing them appreciate their time here as adults, that’s the stuff that counts.”

The Bulls are navigating a challenging non-conference schedule, having recently faced a tough Vanderbilt team. Fernandez remains optimistic despite some early setbacks, focusing on long-term growth and conference play.

“I’m not panicked,” Fernandez said. “This schedule is tough for a reason. We’re going through adversity now to prepare for league play and a conference championship. We’ve got the right people in the locker room, and I believe in this group.”

Now in his 26th season, Fernandez has firmly established himself as a legend in USF Athletics. His legacy extends beyond wins and awards, marked by his impact on players’ lives and the program’s rise to prominence.

The Bulls will return to action against The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley today, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Yuengling Center.
