St. Petersburg has no shortage of whimsy or magic, but American Stage’s new production is the newest addition to this city’s wonder.
Fairyland: A Midwinter Night’s Dream will come to life on the mystical trails of Boyd Hill Nature Preserve and will tell the story of a group of lovers who encounter mischief and enchantment in the woods.
Anthony Gervais, the Associate Art Director for the production, said that having the play in a space like Boyd Hill is a part of its Tale by Twilight program.
“We’ve tried to really bring theater to different locations in the city that people enjoy going to where they might not normally see theater,” Gervais said.
Since the play is set in the forest, they thought that the preserve would be the perfect place to host it.
Past locations where they’ve hosted plays and stage readings include the FloridaRAMA gallery, the Duncan McClellan Gallery, the Dalí Museum, Book + Bottle, Tombolo Books, and Green Bench Brewing.

Gervais shared that A Midwinter Night’s Dream will have countless opportunities for audience interaction. While it is completely optional, the audience can get involved in many different ways.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing how that plays out because it will change the show every night,” said Gervais. “It’s also an all-ages show, so it’s totally fun for adults and young people.”
Beyond this production, American Stage is also running Into the Woods in the Park from Mar. 25 until Apr. 26, Fresh Ink: Fangs on Feb. 24, and The Hot Wing Kind in June.
Tickets for Fairyland: A Midwinter Night’s Dream can be purchased on American Stage’s website and are free for anyone under the age of 20. They also offer a discount for service members and their families.
