Student Government (SG) at the University of South Florida welcomed new representatives after the three campuses’ midterm elections.
At the St. Petersburg campus, three seats were vacant for Senate and three seats for Campus Council. Three students ran for both positions –– Nathan Poinsette, Dielle D’Lima and Julia Bailey. Additionally, Jack Hernandez ran for Senate and Erin Turney for Campus Council.
Jackson told The Crow’s Nest that during his time in SG, he wants to create an accepting atmosphere that allows for disagreements without hostility in order for change to be made.
Of St. Petersburg’s 3529 eligible voters, 383 cast their votes. Voters could choose up to three candidates for Senate and Campus Council.
After extending the 48-hour voting period time due to a voting software mishap, the results confirmed Nathan Poinsette, Julia Bailey and Jack Hernandez as senators, and Erin Turney and Dielle D’Lima as campus council representatives.
Poinsette earned 142 votes, Bailey 99 votes and Hernandez 70 votes for Senate. Turney earned 93 votes and D’Lima 88 votes for Campus Council.
According to the SG website, Senators and Campus Council members “serve as the elected representatives of the Student Body to the SG Senate and shall use their vote and their speaking rights to fulfill this role as representatives.”
The Tampa campus selected Emma Goodwin, Ava Moreno, Kaitlyn Rodriguez and Jackson Jones to fill the four vacant Campus Council seats, and Muskan Patel, Faria Mohsen, Ashfak Chowdhurry, Joao ‘JP’ Magalhaes, Eric Silva-Gomez, Sumit Subhash Jadhav, Linh Khanh Tran and Vittoria Patti to take the eight vacant Senate seats.
At the Sarasota-Manatee campus, Maegan Durinzi and Alexis Santi filled the two Campus Council seats, and Valeria Ferrari was appointed as senator.
