Crow’s Nest and USFSP Community Relations to host screening of “RAZED”

By Matthew McGovern

The Crow’s Nest and the University of South Florida St. Petersburg Community Relations will host a screening of “RAZED,” a film directed by Andrew Lee, Gwendolyn Reese and Tara Segall.

Debuting in early 2025, “RAZED” tells the story of St. Petersburg’s historic Gas Plant District, which Tropicana Field now occupies. Lee and Segall collaborated with former Gas Plant District resident Gwendolyn Reese, who is the sitting President of the St. Petersburg African American Heritage Association.

The film tells a modern tale of displaced peoples in a once- thriving community. A series of public development projects spanning back to the 1970s began the process of erasure in the heart of St. Petersburg. The construction of Tropicana field in the late 1980s furthered an issue that has remained largely unknown outside of the community that was impacted.

The directors of “RAZED” hope that it can serve as a blueprint for the future of St. Petersburg as the city continues to grow at a torrid pace.

In its opening weekend, “RAZED” drew in 800 viewers in two screenings at the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg’s Center for Health Equity.

The sixth showing of the film hosted by USF St. Petersburg’s The Crow’s Nest will take place on Sept. 2 from 5-8 p.m. in the University Student Center ballrooms followed by a Q&A with director Andrew Lee. The screening will be open to students, staff and the public.
