USF St. Petersburg Student Government Governor, El USF St. Petersburg Student Government Governor, Elise Prophete, is speaking out after not being able to give the speech she’d initially written for the annual Rocky's Leadership Award Ceremony.

“I am choosing to do what is right for me and provoke the thoughts that I hope are right for this campus. To shift the self-censoring, student-second attitudes back into a space where the stories we have are told and appreciated,” Prophete wrote.

Zahid Hasan Pranto, Bristy’s brother, shared a  Zahid Hasan Pranto, Bristy’s brother, shared a Facebook post on April 26 with a joint statement attached from both students’ families. 

“This is the final plea to the authorities on behalf of our family and Jamil’s family,” Pranto’s translated post read. “May Allah grant their departed souls a place of honor in Jannah. Our loss is indescribable and can never be compensated for by anything. On behalf of myself and our families, I humbly request that we do not post anything disrespectful about them for the sake of a few 'likes.' Please, pray for them instead.”

On April 19-20 and April 26, the new Musical Theat On April 19-20 and April 26, the new Musical Theatre Club at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg put on a student-directed production of “Theory of Relativity.”

“Theory of Relativity” is a musical written by Brian Hill with music and lyrics by Neil Bartram. The ensemble musical uses seemingly separate comedic and dramatic scenes that portray the complex situations that young adults experience and how they eventually connect to each other.  

This cast had no shortage of talent, with actors fully embodying their characters.

On April 16, students at the University of South F On April 16, students at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg attended the annual cherry blossom festival hosted by the Asian American and Pacific Islander Association. 

At the campus fountain, attendees enjoyed catered food and an assortment of origami crafts, board games and a prize raffle, in addition to a Kendama tournament and haiku slam poetry.

The two-hour Hanami celebration — which Japan annually observes in early April — was the organization’s last event of the semester.

The event was a full-circle moment for Tongta Vachara, sophomore in health sciences and president of AAPIA, as it was where she first was recruited to the club’s e-board.

“Just being able to plan this event for other people and really instilling the same joy that I had experienced back then, it's just a very full circle moment and it was just really, really valuable to me,” Vachara told The Crow’s Nest.

Vachara said the festival was her favorite event from the organization — and with the scenic bougainvilleas and breezy weather this year, the timing was perfect.

Taryn Sabia, the assistant dean of research at the Taryn Sabia, the assistant dean of research at the University of South Florida’s College of Art, Design and Performance, announced her candidacy for Tampa mayor on March 2. 

Since coming to USF in 2014, Sabia has taught graduate-level courses focused on urban design policy, climate change, sustainability, urban transportation systems and more. 

Sabia is the co-founder of Urban Charette — an organization that focuses on educating community leaders on innovative community planning and design.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), a le The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), a learning program for local seniors looking to continue their education, expanded to the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus in spring 2025. Since then, the OLLI program at USF St. Petersburg has welcomed seniors from across the city to participate in low-cost opportunities for learning. 

Each course and lecture offered in the OLLI program is geared toward building a stronger community between seniors living in St. Petersburg. In a city with a dense population of retirees, the OLLI program is an accessible way for seniors to stay active and involved.

On April 6, students at USF St. Petersburg gathere On April 6, students at USF St. Petersburg gathered for a second round of debates between the political left and right. 

Like the first debate, students took sides on a range of topics including mass deportation, U.S. involvement in international conflicts, universal healthcare and whether cats are better than dogs. 

With the current political polarization occurring across the country, students find that these debates foster a peaceful dialogue between disagreeing sides.
