On April 16, students at the University of South F On April 16, students at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg attended the annual cherry blossom festival hosted by the Asian American and Pacific Islander Association.

At the campus fountain, attendees enjoyed catered food and an assortment of origami crafts, board games and a prize raffle, in addition to a Kendama tournament and haiku slam poetry.

The two-hour Hanami celebration — which Japan annually observes in early April — was the organization’s last event of the semester.

The event was a full-circle moment for Tongta Vachara, sophomore in health sciences and president of AAPIA, as it was where she first was recruited to the club’s e-board.

“Just being able to plan this event for other people and really instilling the same joy that I had experienced back then, it's just a very full circle moment and it was just really, really valuable to me,” Vachara told The Crow’s Nest.

Vachara said the festival was her favorite event from the organization — and with the scenic bougainvilleas and breezy weather this year, the timing was perfect.

Each course and lecture offered in the OLLI program is geared toward building a stronger community between seniors living in St. Petersburg. In a city with a dense population of retirees, the OLLI program is an accessible way for seniors to stay active and involved.

On April 6, students at USF St. Petersburg gathere On April 6, students at USF St. Petersburg gathered for a second round of debates between the political left and right.

Like the first debate, students took sides on a range of topics including mass deportation, U.S. involvement in international conflicts, universal healthcare and whether cats are better than dogs.

With the current political polarization occurring across the country, students find that these debates foster a peaceful dialogue between disagreeing sides.
