Get ready for a tournament-filled spring on campus – Archive

Have you ever wanted to give water polo a try? Think you can outshoot your opponents at lawn darts? You’ll have the chance to do both of those and many other unique games this spring at USF St. Petersburg.

The spring 2011 semester will include some different options for students that want to play intramural games without being tied down by weekly competitions.

“The main difference between spring and fall will be the amount of tournaments,” said Todd Clark, the intramural and fitness coordinator at USFSP. “We are doing this to give more students the opportunity to participate in on-campus activities that cannot play in a seven- or nine-week intramural league because of the time commitment.”

One of the new tournaments is inter-tube water polo. It will be held at the Waterfront and is an open play league, meaning anyone can come out to participate in it.

“This is one of the fastest-growing intramural sports in the country,” Clark said.

The game is played with two teams, and one team must score on the other team’s goal. The league will not start until the middle of the semester when the weather warms up.

A lawn games competition will be an informal tournament where students can participate in games like ladder ball, lawn darts, corn hole and bocce ball. It will take place on Jan. 26 on the Harborwalk and will have food and prizes for competitors.

“This will be a time for students to have fun and find out more information of what campus recreation has to offer,” Clark said.

“Hoop It Up” is a 3-on-3 basketball tournament with three separate divisions—men’s, women’s, and co-rec. It will be held over the course of a few days. A DJ will play music in the CAC core, and prizes will be awarded to the winners of each division.

For those who do enjoy the weekly competitiveness of an intramural league, campus recreation will still offer the usual sports options, including flag football, basketball and soccer.

Registration for intramural sports is now open. To register for tournaments or leagues, students can submit a team, or register as a free agent and be placed on a team that needs players. For more information and to register, visit www.stpt.usf.edu/studentlife/campus_recreation/SpringSports.htm.
