Election ballot includes referenda – Archive

Students will vote on two referenda during the Student Government general elections April 4 to April 7 on Blackboard.

One referendum will ask students’ opinions on the proposed Student Green Energy Fund to fund green initiatives on campus. The second referendum will ask students if they believe that USF St. Petersburg should have a seat on the USF Board of Trustees.

The board is comprised of 12 to 15 members, including one student and one faculty member. USF Tampa SG President Cesar Hernandez currently holds the student seat on the board. The other campuses in the USF system, including USF St. Petersburg, do not have direct representation on the board.

USF Tampa has a larger population and “believes they should hold that seat,” said SG President James Scott. “They think sharing the seat doesn’t make sense.”

Part of Scott’s focus this year has been lobbying for a change to the system to get more equal representation for USF St. Petersburg and the other USF campuses.

The referendum is intended to give next year’s SG president more political weight when lobbying for representation.

Voting begins on Blackboard on April 4 at noon, and ends on April 7 at midnight.
