The “puppets in the courtroom” playlist

It has been a great year for puppets. In late 2011, the Muppets returned to theaters for the first time in over a decade under Jason Segel’s tutelage. In 2012, puppets have gone a step farther and are taking over the American judicial system.

After a Cleveland court banned cameras in a high-profile corruption trial, staffers at local CBS affiliate WOIO stuck their arms in some puppets to reenact scenes for viewers. And with stories involving gambling, hookers and sexually transmitted diseases, these puppets are putting in work.

This playlist is in honor of them and all their felt-skinned brethren who have toiled at the beck and call of their puppet masters over the years.

“Master of Puppets” – Metallica
The life of a puppet is a hard one. People push and pull you around all day, using you for their own exploits, and when it’s over, you get hung up somewhere or shoved in a box. But they keep on smiling. Metallica nails that masochistic life in this single off their third album.

“Bye Bye Bye” – ‘N Sync
An evil puppetress holds the strings of Joey, Chris, Justin, Lance and JC, and they escape in action-packed sequences as she cuts them free. The video held a record for being in the No. 1 spot on TRL—25 days total—until it was replaced by another ‘N Sync song. Get this: It came out 12 years ago this week.

“The Internet is for Porn” – Avenue Q
Trekkie Monster is a blatant parody of Cookie Monster in “Avenue Q,” a musical starring puppets alongside humans. However, instead of cookies, Trekkie loves watching pornography on the Internet. “Why you think the net was born? Porn! Porn! Porn!”

“Rainbow Connection” – The Muppets
They might be talking frogs and diva pigs. They might be inept bears and jazz-loving dogs. Some of them might be chefs that talk completely in gibberish, mutes that blow up science experiments or weird, unidentifiable blue creatures. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t write songs that make us cry.

“Elmo’s Song” – Sesame Street
You don’t have to write clever lyrics when you’re Elmo. All you have to do is look cute and you can sell millions of plush versions of yourself.

“Hot N Cold” – Katy Perry
Katy cleaned up the lyrics of her song for a special appearance on “Sesame Street,” but forgot to put on an appropriate shirt. The performance appeared on the Internet, but was never shown on the show after parents complained. This playlist is brought to you by the letter D-cup.
