New club explores sex and relationships

On Thursday nights, Davis Lounge transforms into a home for the new Sex & Relationships Club. More than 30 curious students meet at 7 p.m. to learn and discuss the personal issues that matter to them.

“[The club] promotes safe sex and discusses the quality of relationships,” said Christa Hegedus, a freshman biology major and leader of club. “For example, at our previous meeting we discussed what a person should get a guy for Valentine’s Day.”

Hegedus opened the meeting with a story resembling the classic case of Lorena Bobbit, a woman who severed her husband’s penis with a knife. However, the personal stories, anecdotes and advice the students shared with one another were anything but violent.

“What do men do that annoy you so much?” Hegedus asked the women.

“His jealousy,” one member replied.

Sophmore Valerie Nyitray and freshman Shannon Oust agreed it was lack of communication.

The same question was turned over to the men.

“I hate it when they turn whatever you say against you,” said freshman A.J. Hernandez.

Others agreed that they dislike when women ask too many questions.

Both genders concurred that a lack of communication and effort were the main catalysts for problems. Whatever problem one person had, another seemed to suffer at some point.

Hegedus said that she started the Sex & Relationships Club because she didn’t see any other clubs tackling those topics.

“I feel that the campus, among other communities, should be open about sex because it is a human necessity,” she said. “Hopefully the club may save one relationship at a time.”

As the discussions progressed, each member offered discussions and insights varying from where to go for dinner to how to deter an attacker. Some stories stirred laughter and nods of agreement.

“Relationships are based upon trust,” said sophomore Frank Mathis. “Establish trust with the other person and communicate, otherwise it’s pointless.”
