SEAS plans Earth friendly events

The Student Environmental Awareness Society is preparing to launch eco-friendly activities to celebrate the Earth. With spring just weeks away, the environmentally focused club has planned ahead for campus activities.
SEAS focuses on promoting environmental awareness on campus as well as within the community. Club members try to share this message through activities like beach clean-ups and events meant to bring awareness to environmental issues. The group will hold its first beach clean up of the semester on Sunday, Feb. 26, meeting on the Harbor Lawn at noon.
“We are not a group to force ideas down [people’s] throats, but to hopefully give them the opportunity to understand who we are as an environmental awareness group,” said SEAS President Solange Gorleku.
Earth Hour on Saturday, March 31, is a global event that calls for an hour without any technology or electricity, saving energy during that hour. Starting at 8:30 p.m., SEAS plans to hold an outdoor party with glow-in-the-dark field games, a neon theme and the lights out on campus. The club is hoping to work with Residence Hall One for the event.
SEAS will celebrate Earth Day in April with Earth Week, promoting sustainable living. It will run from April 18 to April 20. Activities planned include creating a plant out of recycled water bottles, tie dye T-shirt making, a guest speaker on sustainable gardening, a clothing swap and an unveiling of USFSP’s shoreline, adopted by SEAS through the Adopt-a-Shore program.
