The “I screwed up big time” playlist

Hey, friend. Did you know Valentine’s Day was last week? We’re sure you already heard about it from your special guy or lady if you didn’t. Plenty of people either give their lover something late or completely miss the day every year. It’s OK. Here’s what you need to do: Go out and buy a teddy bear. A really big one. Put some chocolates in his hand. Now go home and download all of the following songs. They’ll take care of the apology part. The rest is up to you.

“All Apologies” – Nirvana
This song was literally written with loved ones in mind—Kurt Cobain wrote it for Courtney Love and his daughter Francis Bean Cobain. We’re not really sure what he’s talking about with the whole “everyone is gay” line, but that’s OK. If your special man or lady friend has any taste in music, he or she will get the point.

“Cleanin’ Out My Closet” – Eminem
If there’s a better way to tell someone you’re sorry than by playing him or her a song by the real Slim Shady, we don’t know what it is. “Closet” was one of Eminem’s first seriously introspective songs, baring his soul and showing us the grit of his childhood. Take Eminem’s lead and bare your own soul. Maybe you’ll be forgiven.

“Always on my Mind” – Willie Nelson
Nelson’s Grammy-winning song was dedicated to his wife, Connie. He wanted to tell her he was sorry for not always being there for her. Elvis released a version of the song 10 years earlier, a few weeks after splitting with Priscilla. If it’s good enough for Willie Nelson and Elvis Presley, it’s probably good enough for you.

“Apology Song” – The Decemberists
Colin Meloy sings his apology to a friend, named Steven, for losing his bicycle. Lighthearted and earnest, this might be just the song you need to get your significant other to lighten up and smile a bit. That’s when you need to bring out the teddy bear.

“The Scientist” – Coldplay
Who can resist Chris Martin, especially when paired up with a stuffed animal and chocolate? “The Scientist” was one of the band’s first singles, and one of their best.

A little caveat here: If these songs don’t work or you hear your scorned lover playing “You’re Not Sorry” by Taylor Swift, “Apologize” by One Republic or “Cute Without The ‘E’ “ by Taking Back Sunday, you’re going to need to bring out the big guns. Play this:

“Perfect” – Simple Plan
Pair up the whiniest voice in music with the most melodramatic sniveling lyrics and you come up with this song. If the music doesn’t get your lover to accept your apology, it might annoy him or her enough to call a truce.
