On Saturday, March 31, USF St. Petersburg will take part in a worldwide event recognizing the grandeur of planet earth, as well as the serious plight that it faces.
Earth Hour is a global boycott in which participants refrain from using electricity and technology for one hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Within that hour, students are called to celebrate the natural world and experience some of the joys that technology cannot provide, while simultaneously conserving a massive amount of energy.
The creators also hope that those involved will be inspired to reflect upon what their planet means to them and consider implementing some simple lifestyle changes that could aid in conserving its bounty and beauty.
The event is hosted by the Student Environmental Awareness Society, the Quidditch Club, the Residence Hall Association and the Fun and Games Club. During the hour of darkness, the groups will illuminate the lawn at Harborside for a party featuring glow-in-the-dark field games and other electricity-free activities.
It costs nothing to attend and food will be provided.
