Harbordside Activities Board President Jamie Kennedy recently announced during a meeting the decision for next year’s HAB executive board. Junior Lauren Dakers will serve as president, with sophomore Solange Gorleku as vice president for the 2012-2013 year.
“I have been in HAB three years now,” said Dakers, who is the organization’s current director of film. The environmental science and policy major said that it was her interest and love of movies that made her join the group. She has organized events such as 2011’s Halloween “Die-In” and “Farewell to the Core.”
Dakers is a STREAMS scholar and is also a marine educator at the Pier Aquarium in her spare time. She hopes to obtain her M.A. in Marine Biology someday.
“Coming into the next year, I plan to keep HAB as the wonderful organization that it is and I hope to plan more meaningful events that are not only fun, but also purposeful and educational,” she said.
Gorleku is a member of the HAB Special Events Committee. She is involved in the Student Environmental Awareness Society, Phi Sigma Theta Honor Society, Student Government, and is currently running for Miss USF in the Mr. and Miss University of South Florida Scholarship Pageant.
“What actually got me hooked was creating the Haunted House last year,” Gorleku said. “I knew then that it was my niche to help make events for our students.”
In her spare time, Gorleku enjoys art and playing the violin. She hopes to become a veterinarian for exotic animals.
“I really want to focus on recruitment and getting more students involved on campus events,” she said. “It is such a fun thing to do and I think students are missing out.”
