News in brief: Indigenous Floridians, International Week and the USF ‘U’ logo


Librarian Jim Schnur and anthropology graduate Elizabeth Southard will present “Early Footprints in the Sand: Pre-Columbian Settlements along the Pinellas Peninsula and the Legacies of First Contact” on Feb. 21 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Poynter Library.

The discussion will focus on the indigenous people who inhabited Florida’s west coast before Spanish colonization and remnants of 500-year-old tools and pottery will be on display.

 

International Week, featuring a series of films, forums and luncheons focusing on global interaction, is coming to USFSP Feb. 25 through March 1.

The week kicks off with the Moldovan Student Exchange on Feb. 25, which will connect USFSP students to students in Moldova via video chat at 9 a.m. in the University Student Center Coral Room.

On Feb. 26, the Peace Corps will have an information table set up in the library from 9 to 11 a.m. Further information on joining the Peace Corps will be provided in the USC Ocean Room from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

On Feb. 26, Ashraf Khalil, an Arab-American journalist, will present “Liberation Square: Inside the Egyptian Revolution” in the USC ballroom from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Khalil’s discussion will address the role of social media in sparking the Egyptian revolution.

Student Government had secured permission to use the USF athletic logo on the basketball court outside the USC.

Plans for the logo’s placement will be finalized at a meeting on Feb. 18. According to SG general assembly minutes, the logo will cost about $3,000.
