Sustainability planner resigns, future of role uncertain

By Anna Bryson

Brian Pullen, the university’s sustainability planner, has resigned. His last day will be Friday, Sept. 7.

Because of USF St. Petersburg’s consolidation with USF Tampa, the future of the role sustainability planner on campus is unclear.

“I feel like we do need someone in here in my role but I see how the consolidation will make it uncertain,” Pullen said.

Since Pullen joined the university in 2016, he has moved the university forward in its sustainability. He developed the Climate Action Plan, in partnership with the city of St. Petersburg, that put USF St. Petersburg on track to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and reduce greenhouse emissions. He also played a key role in achieving LEED certifications for Lynn Pippenger Hall and the Warehouse Lab Building on campus.

“I’ve definitely seen a transformation in the past two years in terms of sustainability and seeing the change here,” Pullen said.

Pullen’s next endeavor will be as sustainability manager for Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, CA.

“I’m not leaving on bad terms, it’s just an opportunity to advance my career,” Pullen said. “It will always be a place in my heart because I went to grad school at USF Tampa. Both the students and employees will always be near and dear to me.”
