Crow’s Nest reporter Nancy McCann has been named the second best college news reporter in the South by the Society of Professional Journalists.

McCann, a graduate student who has doggedly covered the consolidation of the USF system and its implications for the St. Petersburg campus, was honored in SPJ’s annual Green Eyeshade competition.

She finished second in the category of “Best News Reporter in the South.”

First place was awarded to Anton Delgado of Elon University in North Carolina and third place to Kristen Grau of Florida Atlantic University.

“Nancy’s thorough, determined reporting and clear writing have distinguished The Crow’s Nest,” said editor-in-chief Emily Wunderlich. “We are delighted that the Green Eyeshade judges agree with us that she is a terrific student journalist.”

The Green Eyeshade awards – one of journalism’s most coveted honors – were established in 1950 by the Atlanta chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The annual competition recognizes distinctive work in print, television, radio and digital platforms in 11 states in the Southeast. It is judged by journalists and journalism educators from outside the region.

This year’s top award went to the staff of the South Florida Sun Sentinel for a 10-month investigation that exposed lies and failures by both educators and law enforcement in the Parkland school massacre.
