Kathryn Hyer, professor and associate director at the School of Aging Studies at USF Tampa, passed away Jan. 1 from a rare form of cancer called cholangiocarcinoma.

Hyer was 67 years old.

Lindsay Peterson, who worked on a research team with Hyer, told the Tampa Bay Times Hyer “was at the peak of her career.”

Hyer served on the Florida Gold Seal Panel of the Governor’s Panel on Excellence in Long-Term Care and spent almost twenty years doing research on the link between staffing and care quality as well as the needs of the nursing home residents. Hyer also advocated for better training for doctors regarding aging.

James Appleby, executive director and CEO of the Gerontological Society of America, told the Times Hyer’s “loss will be felt acutely on the national stage.”
