Points came from everywhere among the Bulls as they set a record for most 3-pointers in a game in program history in the 89-72 against the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) on Jan. 27.
USF cashed in 18 3-pointers on 55% shooting. Sophomore Kobe Knox and senior guards Chris Youngblood and Jose Placer matched the team high of four 3-pointers made. Knox also led the team in his 18-point performance.
Five of the Bulls finished the game with double-digit points for the third time this season.
This record-setting performance is now tied for second in the conference for most 3-pointers in a game this season. Memphis holds the record with 19 made threes this season against Wichita State on Jan. 14.
Head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim also wanted to highlight the defense as part of their “elite performance.”
“Let’s not get stuck on offense. Let’s continue to hang our head on that defensive end of the court,” Abdur-Rahim said.
The Bulls’ defense held UTSA to 34% from deep, only hitting 10 shots.
“We knew they were an aggressive shooting team, so that’s something we wanted to come into this game with just focusing on our defensive end, not letting them hit a lot of threes. And we know that’s our specialty whenever we’re sharing the ball, we can knock down shots too,” Knox said.
The Bulls have started conference play with a 7-1 record — USF’s best start in program history.
With the Bulls firing on all cylinders, they are now tied for first place in the American Athletic Conference with Charlotte and Florida Atlantic.
“Not a lot of people expect us to be this good, but that’s just fuel to our fire,” Knox said.
USF is currently on the road as they defeated the East Carolina Pirates 71-60 on Feb. 1 to extend their win streak to six, which is tied for the longest streak in program history.
The last time USF went on a six-game winning streak was in the 1991-92 season.
