February sports recap: From the hardwood to the golf greens, USF broke record books in February

Romi Levy leads charge: Women’s basketball stand tall in AAC contention 

The Lady Bulls led by junior forward Romi Levy and freshman guard Vittoria Blasigh battled their way through February and lit up the stat sheet.   

Blasigh earned her sixth AAC Freshman of The Week award this season while averaging 11.2 points per game and Levy averaged 18 points per game in eight games and was selected to the AAC Honor Roll for two straight weeks.   

The Bulls finished the month 4-4 and are in the middle of the pack of the AAC at 16-13.  

The Lady Bulls will close out the regular season with a short homestand against Tulane University on March 2 before heading to Southern Methodist University on March 5.  

The AAC Tournament will be held at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth Texas, March 9-13.

Record-breaking run: Men’s basketball rewrite history with longest winning streak 

The Bulls rewrote the history books to close out February as they pushed their winning streak to 13 — the longest winning streak in program history.  

For the first time, the Bulls are ranked in the Associated Press’s top 25 at no. 25.   

The Yuengling Center was sold out in back-to-back games against Florida Atlantic University and Southern Methodist University for the first time in USF history. Senior guard Selton Miguel was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week averaging 17.5 points per game in two games including a career high of 25 points.  

USF has three remaining games, Charlotte on March 2, back at Yuengling on March 5 to Tulane and the season finale in Tulsa on March 9 to play the Golden Hurricanes.   

The AAC Tournament will be held at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth Texas, March 13-17.

Men’s tennis holds strong amidst competitive challenges 

The men’s tennis team kicked off February with a 6-1 win against Charlotte at home and then lost against Stetson 2-5.  

The Bulls then traveled to Coral Gables to play the University of Miami. Bruno Oliveira and Ben Hudson won with their doubles playing while No. 17 Alvin Tudorica and Erik Grevelius fell short to the No. 30- ranked duo in the country.  

The team traveled back home to play Georgia Southern and Florida Gulf Coast on the same day and and won both matches.

Singles success: Women’s tennis continues winning streak 

The USF women’s tennis team started the month off strong with a win against the University of North Florida, 6-1. Double’s partners put up a great battle while the Lady Bulls did just as well when playing singles.  

Following this game, the Lady Bulls took home another win with the same score of 6-1. Then followed some tough competition over the past few weeks taking a loss against rival Florida Atlantic University with a score of 3-4.  

 Grace Schumacher and Nadja Bay Christians held their own by winning but North Texas had taken over the other two courts.  

Melisa Senli won two consecutive singles sets that tied up the score. The women’s tennis team followed with some more losses, one against No. 11 Auburn 0-7.

Road to Nationals: Athletes qualify for NCAA indoor championships 

USF claimed the men’s AAC Indoor Track and Field Championship for the first time in program history with 156 points and six event winners.   

The women’s team placed third place in the championship with one event winner.  

Head coach Erik Jenkins and his staff were awarded the men’s coaching staff of the year.   

Sophomore sprinter Abdul-Rasheed Saminu has been crushing the record books as he set another program record in the 60m dash with a 6.57 in the AAC indoor track and field championship. Saminu will compete in the 60m dash and senior sprinter Shevioe Reid will compete in the 200m dash after qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships that takes place March 8-9 in Boston, Mass.

Softball continues to impress with strong start to season 

USF’s softball team got off to a hot start, wrapping up February with a 12-5 record, which puts them third in the AAC behind East Carolina University and Florida Atlantic University.  

Inclement weather cancelled games against Hofstra and Purdue University on Feb. 17 and 18 that will not be made up.   

Graduate infielder Alanah Rivera is seventh in the conference with a batting average with a .429. 

USF will soon start conference matches against Charlotte on March 8-10 at the USF Softball Stadium.

Baseball overcomes slow start, makes history against Marist College 

USF’s baseball team had a slow start dropping it’s first two games against the University of Connecticut and Indiana State.  

The Bulls turned it around in the first series of the season against Marist College. USF defeated the Red Foxes by 10 or more runs in four consecutive games for the first time in program history. Through the series, USF scored 49 runs to the Red Foxes six runs. 

USF is currently second the in AAC with a 4-3 record behind East Carolina.

Record-breaking performance: Women’s golf sets program record at Westbrook Invitational 

Women’s golf picked up a win at the FAU Paradise Invitational posting a score of 857 (-7).  

Senior Melanie Green won individually with a score of 210 (-6) and was named AAC Golfer of The Week twice.  

The nationally ranked Bulls (n. 32) finished fourth in the Westbrook Invitational, setting a program record with a score of 836 on 54-hole courses.   

Green set a career high and tied the program record with 64 (-8) in the final round of the tournament.

Jake Peacock leads Bulls to victory at Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate 

Men’s golf finished third in the Florida Gators Invitational. Junior Jake Peacock placed sixth individually. Peacock turned up the heat at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate posting his second career win and first win as a Bull shooting 207 (-9).  

USF finished second behind Virginia Commonwealth University.
