Taryn Sabia, the assistant dean of research at the Taryn Sabia, the assistant dean of research at the University of South Florida’s College of Art, Design and Performance, announced her candidacy for Tampa mayor on March 2. 

Since coming to USF in 2014, Sabia has taught graduate-level courses focused on urban design policy, climate change, sustainability, urban transportation systems and more. 

Sabia is the co-founder of Urban Charette — an organization that focuses on educating community leaders on innovative community planning and design.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), a le The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), a learning program for local seniors looking to continue their education, expanded to the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus in spring 2025. Since then, the OLLI program at USF St. Petersburg has welcomed seniors from across the city to participate in low-cost opportunities for learning. 

Each course and lecture offered in the OLLI program is geared toward building a stronger community between seniors living in St. Petersburg. In a city with a dense population of retirees, the OLLI program is an accessible way for seniors to stay active and involved.

On April 6, students at USF St. Petersburg gathere On April 6, students at USF St. Petersburg gathered for a second round of debates between the political left and right. 

Like the first debate, students took sides on a range of topics including mass deportation, U.S. involvement in international conflicts, universal healthcare and whether cats are better than dogs. 

With the current political polarization occurring across the country, students find that these debates foster a peaceful dialogue between disagreeing sides.

Rocky D. Bull got his start not in the physical fo Rocky D. Bull got his start not in the physical form as we know him, but as a cartoon for University of South Florida Athletics to use in their newsletters. 

It wasn’t until 2003 that the mascot was unveiled as the Rocky we see today. 

The friendliness and fun personality that Rocky displays at events are extensions of the USF students under the mask.

A quick opening goal from Tampa Bay Rowdies midfie A quick opening goal from Tampa Bay Rowdies midfielder Marco Micaletto was one of four goals in a 2-2 draw against the Oakland Roots SC on Saturday. The other Rowdies goal was scored close to halftime, with forward Russell Cicerone recording his 100th career goal in the United States League (USL) Championship.

With the tie, the Rowdies remain one of two teams in the United that have yet to lose a match this season in the USL Championship. 

The Rowdies hit the road to play the Charleston Battery on Saturday, April 18.

There is only one place on the University of South There is only one place on the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus where students’ stories, cultures and passions are brought to life: Harbor Hall during the annual senior graphic arts showcase. 

On April 10, students and community members filed into Harbor Hall’s gallery space to see the graphic arts seniors’ work. Their installations serve as their thesis, a final project before graduation. 

“Senior thesis is not for the faint of heart,” graphic arts senior with a concentration in graphic design, Lauren Gaubert, told The Crow’s Nest.

The University of South Florida has not had a func The University of South Florida has not had a functional Office of Sustainability since 2022 and in the midst of demands for USF to reinstate the office, students are calling into question how the university is progressing in its sustainability efforts. 

The last person to hold a position in the Office of Sustainability was Winnie Malumba, a 2019 USF graduate who was the executive director. 

She led two sustainability collectives, Florida For Good and B Tourism.
