USF President Judy Genshaft officially announced her retirement at 2 p.m. Monday during a press conference in the Patel Center at USF Tampa. Her retirement will be effective July 1, 2019.

Genshaft spoke about USF’s “unprecedented” trajectory, including achievements such as the university’s preeminence status, its new chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and this year’s freshman class, which is the most prestigious in the university’s history.

She also announced the News & World Report Best Colleges report that came out this morning, naming USF as the 58th best university in the U.S., a 10-point leap from last year and the highest the university has ever been ranked.

Her husband Steven Greenbaum and two sons Joel and Bryan were in attendance. She said that she and her husband were thinking about her retirement since May.

“It’s a very difficult decision for us,” she said. “USF is a part of us.”

She plans to stay in the Tampa Bay area.

The Board of Trustees will hold a meeting at 5:15 p.m. today to discuss the next steps in the presidential search process.

This is a developing story. Stay with The Crow’s Nest for updates.
